Simply put, it is inevitable that within any team there will be at least one leader. This person may be an official leader that has been specifically placed in that position or they have unofficially moved into that position within the team because of their leadership skills.

It doesn’t take much to be a leader, however to be a great leader the requirements are more demanding. Leadership skills are required in order to guide a team towards success. A leader needs to be able to keep a team motivated and inspired along the way, which is often the more difficult part of the job.

There is a never ending list of traits and characteristics that a good leader should possess.

  • Honesty
  • Trust
  • Compassion/ understanding
  • Positive attitude/ motivating
  • Willing to learn
  • Hunger for a challenge
  • Persistent
  • Courage
  • Great listening skills
  • Approachable
  • Good communication skills

The more basic and perhaps obvious of these traits are often the ones that people struggle to obtain when developing their leadership skills. More often than not, a great leader is either naturally gifted with these qualities or they are not.

In order to enhance and improve leadership skills, leadership development is critical. This is not only for the benefit and understanding of the leader, but also for the relationship between them, their team and ultimately the company as a whole.

Team building is proven to be one of the most successful methods in assisting with the improvement of leadership skills and development.

Strengths and talents

For a leader to be able to guide their team successfully, they need to be aware of where their strengths and weaknesses lie. Leaders usually flourish when they us their strengths to lead a team.

Improve working relationships

This is one of the most important things to master as a team leader. Leadership skills come in many different shapes and forms but if a leader’s relationship with his/ her team members/ colleagues takes strain then a team can easily fall apart.

Team building is something that should be approached by a team as a whole and not only by the leader. The reason for this is that the team is able to experience and learn lessons together which is beneficial to them in real circumstances.

  • Increase effectiveness and productivity
  • Better communication skills
  • Better and deeper understanding
  • Translate goals into outcomes
  • Understand the role of leadership and its importance
  • Develop trust

It is important that team members and the leader/ leaders make use of these points within the working environment. Without efficient understanding between various levels and responsibilities, problems will exist.

Leadership skills are one of the most important job roles that a leader should maintain. Without a clear lead, a team will suffer the consequences of an unorganised, mis- lead team.
