Introducing new employees to a company and more so, a team, can be challenging for not only the new staff member but also the team or business as a whole. Ensuring that team dynamics are maintained and positive will have a great impact on how team members relate to one another and function as a team.

Having teams within the workplace has become a hugely popular way of getting work done quickly and possibly more efficiently. With companies all over the world using and depending on teams to form the crux of the business, it is fundamental that the team dynamics that exist within the team and company are not harming the team’s performance and productivity in any way.

There are a variety of reasons as to why team dynamics may take a bit of a knock after the introduction of new staff. Comfort is one of the biggest contributing factors to this. Many a time, teams or some of the individuals within the team find a comfort zone and because of this, issues within the team are easily resolved. When individuals have been working closely together for a period of time, they learn how to overcome problems and know how others work. This makes it easier to manage the team dynamics a bit better.

Employing new staff can be closely compared to introducing a baby into a family. Other children, as well as the rest of the family need to adjust to change. For an existing team within the workplace, not only do individuals need to adjust, they need to establish a relationship with the new staff member. This certainly changes the team dynamics, and not always for the better.

One sure way of assisting a team in improving team dynamics is through team building. Not only does a day or weekend of team building give the team members time to get to know each other in a more social environment, the team building activities are specifically designed to provide tools and insights that will assist in improving various aspects. These may include:

  • Communication
  • Innovation
  • Team coordination
  • Problem solving
  • Goal setting
  • Strategising
  • Overcoming barriers of various sorts
